Facts about Candy for Candy Lovers

Everyone loves candy that is a given, but do you know when certain items were introduced and why they were. We have compiled a timeline of different events that celebrate the invention of candy and the different ways this treat was introduced to the public. Let us look at the various dates and how they have affected us through the years.

In the year, 1854 something very famous that we will all remember and that is the Whitman’s box of chocolates was introduced. I do not know of anyone who has not at least seen a box of these or have not bought one of these over the years. These are still as popular today as when first introduced. Over 154 years later people still ask for these by name.

Around 1868 Richard Cadbury introduced something that has become very famous and that is the Valentine’s Day box of chocolates. Millions upon millions of Americans have bought these boxes to give to their sweethearts and family members. These are also still very popular today and sell extremely well. Now in 1880’s a company called the Wunderle candy company introduced something that comes around every Halloween that people just love and seem to never get enough of and that is candy corn. Today it is still one of the biggest selling treats for Halloween.

The name William Wrigley Jr is a famous name and in 1893, he introduced Juicy fruit chewing gum and Wrigley’s spearmint chewing gum. Both are still made today and the funny thing about both of these products besides they being extremely popular is the price over the years have not increase a lot. This could have something to do with its popularity. 1896 seen a candy introduced that still is hugely popular among adults and children and that is the tootsie roll. One fact that many people do not know is the creator Leo Hirshfield actually name it after his daughter whose nickname was tootsie.

With the 1900, we had many new candy products that still today people ask for day. One of the most popular items today was introduced in 1900 by Milton S. Hershey and that was the Hershey milk chocolate bar. It is one of the oldest and most popular chocolate bars on the market. Not to many candy bars have been able to equal its success and that is why it has the nickname of the Great American Chocolate Bar. In 1902, the NECCO wafers would first appear named for the acronym of the New England Confectionary Company. The following year this company would roll out candy hearts that we still see today at Valentine’s Day with cute one or two word sayings on them.

1906 would bring the world Hershey Milk Chocolate Kisses, which were small bite, size chocolate that would be wrap in silver foil. This silver foil is still used today, but various other forms of kisses have been released as well. Around 1912 Lifesavers was introduced only in peppermint flavor. It would take another 22 years later before we would see the popular five flavors roll that we still love today. In the 1920’s many new candy bars were introduced such as Baby Ruth, Mounds, Milky Way, Bit-o-Honey, Mike Duds, heath bars, but the one bar that stood out from this crowd was the Reese’s Peanut Butter cup. It was released in 1928 and is one of the best selling candy bars of all-time. It still has a very loyal following today and ranks up there with the Hershey bar as one of the best ever made.

During the 30 and 40, the candy market seen lagging sales and needed a boost. Even though popular bars such as 5th avenue, snickers, and three musketeers were introduced the candy market still slumped. They needed a shot in the arm and along came M&M’s in 1940. These help bring the candy market back and are still very popular today. They come in plain or peanut and still extremely well. In 1954 a different type of candy would hit the market they were called marshmallow peeps. They had a marshmallow taste and designed in the shape of Easter chicks. Today they come in all sizes and shapes and sold all year long. This tasty treat is still very popular, but Easter sales are still the best for this delicious treat.

From the 1960 until today, no really earth-shattering candy was introduced. Starburst was introduced in 1960 and Reese Pieces was released in 1978. Every year it seems something new is introduced, but nothing has moved the market the way the Hershey bar or Reese peanut Butter cup has. Most companies just improved on existing products or add different flavors. Candy through the ages has change just as consumers taste has. The one thing for sure though is we love our candy and with each new product that comes out, we will give it a try. If we do not like it, we can always go back to our favorites that are still made today. Candy is one product that seems to be able to stand the test of time no matter what.
